Since Last We Met…..

Hello Friends!

It seems months have passed since last we met, and yet it’s only been 12 days. And a busy 12 days it’s been. After the wonderful Mother’s Day celebration, I had to quickly shift gears into anniversary celebration mode — that anniversary being, my parents’ 55th on May 21st.  Again, I was in a dilemma…what to buy.  I quickly settled on a house plant — a beautiful “Lucky Bamboo”, which was ordered and delivered right on time.

Friday, 5/22/15, I was back at the doctor’s office for yet another appointment to consider my progress in my long medical crisis. Some progress, but not enough to convince the doctor to declare me “healed” and let me go.

I came home disappointed (again), but as I was updating my Facebook page status that evening, an advertisement along the page caught my eye. It was for something called, “Master Class”(http://www.masterclass.com). Unable to resist the temptation to see what it was all about, I clicked the link. And boy, was I happy I did….There were four class options — Photography taught by Annie Lebowitz, Tennis taught by Serena Williams, Acting taught by Dustin Hoffman, and finally, Writing taught by best-selling novelist James Patterson. Guess which one I picked. Oh come on, take a guess. You KNOW which one I  picked! Yep, for just under $100, I have been drinking and basking in the teaching of James Patterson. The course consists of 22 short videos (each about 15 minutes) where he talks about himself and his method/process for writing a novel from the germ of an idea to finished product. There’s also a corresponding Facebook page where I can interact with others taking the course and the assignments — each at our own pace.  I’m working with two published posts from my blog — “COWBOY”, and “My Thank You Gift To My Readers”, as my jumping off point to what I hope will be my first published novel titled, “COWBOY”.

With everything going on, I’ve also been pleasure reading, and  on the nightstand is The Fifth Gospel by Ian Caldwell, and The Bone Tree by Greg Iles. Both are library books (with long hold lists) so The Bone Tree has to go back tomorrow (boo hoo), but I can put it on hold again, and hopefully get it back in my hands soon.

Since Friday will be here before I know it, I’m going to give you a “heads up” on the topic for Friday Feature — “Let’s Talk Books” — your summer reading list.  What book are you anxious to read this summer? Where do you like to read? Do you read lighter stories in the summer or do you go for the longer, more involved storylines?

Well friends, that’s about it for tonight! Sending you all much love and gratitude for continuing to follow my blog. Wishing you all a very happy fun-filled summer. Oh, and I mustn’t forget to mention those who may be experiencing extreme weather around the world. You’re in my thoughts and prayers.

Until next time,

“Bethie”

A Note About This Week’s Friday Feature: “Let’s Talk Books”

As I mentioned over my last two Friday Feature posts, I want to write a short story for you, my readers and followers, as a “Thank You” gift that I will post on my birthday, April 30th, this coming Thursday. The deadline, if you’re interested in participating in less than 12 hours away.

For those who didn’t see the original post, I’ve copied it here:

Hello to all my friends and followers! Tonight I want to especially welcome new followers to my little corner of cyberspace. Last week, I invited my readers to turn to page 168 in the book they were reading, and copy a complete sentence from the 9th line. No need to mention the book or the author. This week, I’m adding a few additional pieces as I create this special story for you. Those pieces are:

1. a character’s name

2. gender and/or age

3. something unique that makes that character stand out to you.

As a writer, I’m always on the lookout for story starters. By the way, the more sentences and characters I receive, the better, so everyone please participate, share, and tell your friends about my blog.

Now, with whatever sentences and characters I receive by today, Friday 4/24/15, @ midnight California (USA) time, I’ll work them into a short story (over the weekend) as my gift to you for following my blog which I will post on April 30th, my birthday.

Note: No real people or characters that may be recognizable like Frodo Baggins (Lord of the Rings trilogy) or one of my favorites, Harry Potter.

First and foremost, have FUN! 😀  I anxiously await (with a clear brain, and typing fingers at the ready) the pieces of the puzzle that you will give me to work with.

My Introduction To The Blogosphere Starts Now

My name is Beth, but my friends call me “Bethie”, hence the name of my blog, “Bethie’s Place”.  Over many years I have tried to keep a private journal, and I always promise myself each New Year’s Day that I’ll do it, but it always ends up in failure.  So at the end of 2014, I decided to take my thoughts and make them public because it dawned on me that I wanted or needed an audience — someone to write to and for. If you’re interested in getting to know me, better you can find a two-part introduction of who I am posted on my blog.

I look forward to learning the tips and tricks of a successful blog and how to make what now is a pretty bland place, into something that reflects who I am and pops off the page.

My Introduction

My name is Beth, but my closest friends call me “Bethie”, and many of them have encouraged me to start writing a blog. So here I am! I’m sure you’ve noticed my photo and wondered why I’m sitting on my bed covered with an indian print blanket. For the better part of 2014, I have been recovering from two surgeries and subsequent bone infections. I was born with spina bifida (http://www.sbaa.org) and live my life from a wheelchair.

I love to read and I love to write so what you’ll find here are my writings, musings, reviews of books I’ve read, and beginning in 2015 of my adventure into writing The Great American Novel.

As a modern weaver of words and creator of prose, I’ve created this blog, “Bethie’s Place”, for the lover of both fiction and non-fiction, for the young as well as the young-at-heart, using both extraordinary and the ordinary person as central characters for my writings, bridging my love of things old (history) and the ever-changing 21st century world we live in. So in the coming days, weeks, months, and hopefully years to come, I hope I will inspire you, make you smile, and bring a little extra special joy to your day!

Come join me on my journey!! Let’s talk books and writing!
