Friday Feature: “Let’s Talk Books” – A Fun Little Exercise (Part 2)

Hello to all my friends and followers! Tonight I want to especially welcome new followers to my little corner of cyberspace. Last week, I invited my readers to turn to page 168 in the book they were reading, and copy a complete sentence from the 9th line. No need to mention the book or the author. This week, I’m adding a few additional pieces – a character’s name, gender, and something unique that makes that character stand out to you.

As a writer, I’m always on the lookout for story starters. By the way, the more sentences and characters I receive, the better, so everyone please participate, share, and tell your friends about my blog.

Now, with whatever sentences and characters I receive by next Friday 4/24/15, @ midnight, I’ll work them into a short story (over the weekend) as my gift to you for following my blog which I will post on April 30th, my birthday.

Note: No real people or characters that may be recognizable like Frodo Baggins (Lord of the Rings trilogy) or one of my favorites, Harry Potter.

First and foremost, have FUN! 😀  I anxiously await the pieces of the puzzle that you will give me to work with.

Friday Feature: “Let’s Talk Books” — A Fun Little Exercise

Hello to all my friends and followers! It’s been a busy, stressful day, and I just looked up at the clock and realized that Friday is almost gone, and Saturday will be here in a matter of minutes. As a writer, I’m always on the lookout for story starters. For this week, I would like you to turn to page 168 in the current book you’re reading, and copy a complete sentence from the 9th line. Don’t reveal the title, just the sentence.  You need only share one sentence. By the way, the more sentences I receive, the better, so everyone please share, and tell your friends about my blog.  Now, with whatever sentences I receive by next Friday, I’ll work them into a short story as my gift to you for following my blog which I will post on April 30th, my birthday. Sound like fun?

Friday Feature: “Let’s Talk Books”

Welcome friends and followers of “Bethie’s Place”, and the weekly feature, “Let’s Talk Books”! 😀  This week’s topic for discussion is…. drumroll please…. “What Books Are On The Nightstand? The Kindle? The TBR (To Be Read List)?

For me, the books on the nightstand (at the moment) are (in no particular order):

Secrets She Left Behind by Diane Chamberlain

Leaving The World by Douglas Kennedy

Boston Girl by Anita Diamant

Where Do You Get Your Ideas? by Fred White

There are approximately 100 books on the Kindle (a mix of fiction and nonfiction), 15 from NetGallery.com (my newest best friend, lol) and a long list of TBR books.

Okay, you know what my reading list looks like, so let me know about yours…. “Let’s Talk Books”!!! 😀

Friday Feature: “Let’s Talk Books” — Characters

Welcome to Friday Feature: “Let’s Talk Books”!  Today’s discussion topic is characters — those we’ve loved, and those we’ve not so loved.  As a writer, I’m constantly creating characters, and the questions below are some that I use as a blueprint to create them. If you’re reading a book, and I hope you are, pick up that book and let’s look at/discuss the characters in it. Consider the questions below as you read:

1. Describe the main character—personality traits, motivations, inner qualities.

2.  Describe the dynamics between characters (in a marriage, family, or friendship).

3. Do you admire or disapprove of them?

4. Do they remind you of people you know?

5.  Is there a change in the main character by the end of the book?

6. Does he/she grow or mature?

7. Does he/she learn something about themselves and how the world works?

BONUS DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (For Extra Credit– LOL):

1. Of all the books you’ve read in your lifetime, is there a character that has stuck with you?

2.  Which one? From what book?

3. What types of characters are you drawn to? Which ones do you shy away from? Why?

Note: I hope you won’t think of these questions as “homework” but as simply discussion starters or to help you to become a more engaged/active reader. I’ll be sharing my current read over the weekend. Stay tuned!! 😀

Friday Feature — “Let’s Talk Books!”

Now that you know that my two passions/obsessions in life are books and writing, I thought that the best way to go about getting a discussion going between us is for me to ask several questions. Answer one or all — Let’s talk books!

1. Who’s your favorite author?
2. What’s your favorite genre? Do you read more than one genre?
3. How do you choose a book? Author, cover art, plot?
4. Do you read more than one book at a time?
5. Do you read a physical book or do you read e-books? Which do you prefer?

My Introduction To The Blogosphere Starts Now

My name is Beth, but my friends call me “Bethie”, hence the name of my blog, “Bethie’s Place”.  Over many years I have tried to keep a private journal, and I always promise myself each New Year’s Day that I’ll do it, but it always ends up in failure.  So at the end of 2014, I decided to take my thoughts and make them public because it dawned on me that I wanted or needed an audience — someone to write to and for. If you’re interested in getting to know me, better you can find a two-part introduction of who I am posted on my blog.

I look forward to learning the tips and tricks of a successful blog and how to make what now is a pretty bland place, into something that reflects who I am and pops off the page.

My Reading List of 2015 — January

Hello to all my readers! I have chosen four books to start the year. They are:

Shopaholic To The Stars — Sophie Kinsella

Orphan Train — Christina Baker Kline

The Lemon Orchard — Luanne Rice

The Girls of August — Anne Rivers Siddons

Of the four books I’ve chosen, the only author new to me is Christina Kline Baker, so I’m excited to give it a try. What drew me to the book was the title and the plot. The other three authors I’ve read for years and enjoyed their writing styles.

My Introduction

My name is Beth, but my closest friends call me “Bethie”, and many of them have encouraged me to start writing a blog. So here I am! I’m sure you’ve noticed my photo and wondered why I’m sitting on my bed covered with an indian print blanket. For the better part of 2014, I have been recovering from two surgeries and subsequent bone infections. I was born with spina bifida (http://www.sbaa.org) and live my life from a wheelchair.

I love to read and I love to write so what you’ll find here are my writings, musings, reviews of books I’ve read, and beginning in 2015 of my adventure into writing The Great American Novel.

As a modern weaver of words and creator of prose, I’ve created this blog, “Bethie’s Place”, for the lover of both fiction and non-fiction, for the young as well as the young-at-heart, using both extraordinary and the ordinary person as central characters for my writings, bridging my love of things old (history) and the ever-changing 21st century world we live in. So in the coming days, weeks, months, and hopefully years to come, I hope I will inspire you, make you smile, and bring a little extra special joy to your day!

Come join me on my journey!! Let’s talk books and writing!
