Friday Feature: “Let’s Talk Books” — Characters

Welcome to Friday Feature: “Let’s Talk Books”!  Today’s discussion topic is characters — those we’ve loved, and those we’ve not so loved.  As a writer, I’m constantly creating characters, and the questions below are some that I use as a blueprint to create them. If you’re reading a book, and I hope you are, pick up that book and let’s look at/discuss the characters in it. Consider the questions below as you read:

1. Describe the main character—personality traits, motivations, inner qualities.

2.  Describe the dynamics between characters (in a marriage, family, or friendship).

3. Do you admire or disapprove of them?

4. Do they remind you of people you know?

5.  Is there a change in the main character by the end of the book?

6. Does he/she grow or mature?

7. Does he/she learn something about themselves and how the world works?

BONUS DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (For Extra Credit– LOL):

1. Of all the books you’ve read in your lifetime, is there a character that has stuck with you?

2.  Which one? From what book?

3. What types of characters are you drawn to? Which ones do you shy away from? Why?

Note: I hope you won’t think of these questions as “homework” but as simply discussion starters or to help you to become a more engaged/active reader. I’ll be sharing my current read over the weekend. Stay tuned!! 😀

  1. Will definitely think of this post when I next start a book.
Of all the characters in recent reads I have to say Alice from Still Alice sticks in my mind. Possibly because I walked that same journey with an aunt of mine.

  2. Hello Bethie – thanks for your comment at Still Waters

When the big A enters your life it can be very difficult for family and the sufferer as I’m sure you remember from your families experience. Such a nasty disease.

I read Still Alice about this time last year (wrote about it on my blog https://cranethie.wordpress.com/2014/04/09/summer-reads/) and can still picture life in that household and how Alice was coping. I think you should read the book – it’s not ‘gruesome’ in any way just very revealing.

You know even tho’ Julianne Moore won an Oscar for her performance I’m not sure if I want to see the movie. Some things are better left ‘unspoken’
Looking forward to your next Friday Feature

  3. I recently finished Sophie Kinsella’s, Shopaholic To The Stars. The main character, Becky Bloomwood is a delightful, funny, sometimes conniving character. A British Lucy Ricardo (I Love Lucy tv show), Becky loves her husband Luke, but more often than not, tries to keep him in the dark about her insatiable spending and her schemes. Throughout the book, her antics make me laugh, and keep me wondering if she’s going to get caught because of her behavior. In the end, she learns a lesson and vows to her dear husband Luke to be a better person (fingers crossed — lol).

    BONUS ANSWERS:

The character that has stuck with me is Liesel Meminger from Markus Zusak’s, The Book Thief (which I highly recommend).

I’m drawn to strong, intelligent female characters with a soft romantic edge. I steer clear of characters in the horror and science fiction genres. Just not my thing.

    Happy Reading! 😀 “Bethie”
