Friday Feature — “Let’s Talk Books!”

Now that you know that my two passions/obsessions in life are books and writing, I thought that the best way to go about getting a discussion going between us is for me to ask several questions. Answer one or all — Let’s talk books!

1. Who’s your favorite author?
2. What’s your favorite genre? Do you read more than one genre?
3. How do you choose a book? Author, cover art, plot?
4. Do you read more than one book at a time?
5. Do you read a physical book or do you read e-books? Which do you prefer?

  1. 1.) Currently I don’t have a favorite author 2.) My favorite genres are mystery and drama 3.) I choose a book by both the cover and plot ( mostly the plot though) 4.) I have found myself reading more than 1 book at a time, but since I have the memory of an ant, I generally loose interest in one of the books 5.) I prefer both. But since I don’t have a bookshelf, I see myself getting ebooks on my Kindle app ( planning on getting a kindle in Feb)

  2. I have so many favorite authors. At the top of the list is Barbara Kingsolver, Stephen King, Cormac McCarthy, and Margaret Atwood. I tend to read a lot of sci-fi/fantasy, but I will read almost anything. A lot of the books I read come from recommendations from blogs or friends. I prefer a physical book, but my e-reader is pretty handy to take with me when I’m travelling.

  3. 1. I don’t think I have a favorite author, so I’ll give you a sampling of who I’ve read/listened to recently… Robert B. Parker, Henning Mankell, Alan Bradley, Jonathan Kellerman, John Verdon, Elizabeth Peters, Vicki Stiefel, Karin Slaughter, Jo Nesbo, Lynda La Plante and Janet Evanovich…that is just in January.
    2. I enjoy mystery, suspense, crime stories. I dislike fantasy, sci-fi, and romance.
    3. If I find an author I like, I will search out all books written by that author to read, and if it is a series, I try to go back to the beginning, like with Sue Grafton. The jacket burb usually helps if I’m looking at a new to me author.
4/5. Sometimes I will have more than one book going, most often I will have one audio book, and one digital (I rarely get real books anymore). I also do not purchase books, I utilize online libraries the most, and physical libraries when I want the smell of paper and ink.

  4. I love a variety of authors and genres. I tend to go into a bookstore and browse until something jumps out at me. Almost always it is a memoir for some reason. I’m currently reading NOW YOU CAN SEE ME by a young woman who is/was going blind. However, I have a lot of books on my TBR shelves and on my Kindle to read. All my life I have read only one book at a time but recently have begun reading several and finishing none 😦

  5. I really enjoy the way you write.

I have just nominated you for the Liebster Award!

  6. Thank you for the the idea to ask others who share their love of reading to me . I think I enjoy reading Devotional books more than any others. I have one devotional book, “Grace Moments” that I have documented reading daily since it was given to me in 2009. I have one or more devotionals in almost every room in my house and because there are words to heal by in them , I never get bored.

  7. Hey! Nice to ‘meet’ you (I’ve come across your site through Blogging 201). I love reading, although I predominantly have to do academic reading (stuck in the middle of the school year, and all that!)
My favourite author is by far Margaret Atwood. Her Dystopias like The Handmaids Tale and Oryx and Crake speak to me the most.
Although I love dystopias in general (Huxley, etc), I used to be completely stuck on historical fiction, then went through a phase of only reading ‘the classics’ from Great Britain… so it varies. The only thing I tend to avoid like the plauge is chick lit- I prefer being baffled by the literary pomp to being bored.
Book choice is done by impulse, often by reading the first three pages, and the summary on the back. I will stick to authors I know to see what else they have written but find that it can get repetitive. Since I now mostly read on Kindle (study abroad in a non-english speaking country makes getting english books more difficult), I do a lot of my decision making based on reviews and on the ‘free sample’. I like my kindle, because I get into a routine of actually reading, and read a lot more than when I have to work to find my next physical book.
Finally- I dont usually read more than one book at the same time. I am already reading so many newspapers, blogs and other sources of information that more than one novel is too much for me to handle. That said, I do read academic books at the same time, so I guess the question is what qualifies as a book?

As I’m currently in Russia I’m working my way through some Russian/soviet classics. Have you read anything from this part of the world? Do you have any suggestions?

  8. Hey Bethie, I like these question as intro to meet and get to know one another.
    1. Who’s your favorite author?
Dan Brown is one of my favorites. I also love Harper Lee

    2. What’s your favorite genre? Do you read more than one genre?
I love Bibliographies, and historical non-fiction.

    3. How do you choose a book? Author, cover art, plot?
I chose books on recommendations from Goodreads and NPR.

    4. Do you read more than one book at a time?
I have at least 6-9 book, I read at a time.

    5. Do you read a physical book or do you read e-books? Which do you prefer?
I, prefer e-books as it is easier maintain the books, I read. I usually read along while listening to a audio book using Overdrive a program from my library.

I’m on Goodreads so check out my listing of my current book list that I’m reading and the books I want to read.

  9. Oh I love so many authors it’s really hard to choose just one. One of my all time favorite is John Green. He’s truly an inspiration. The last book I read by him was The Fault In Our Stars. It’s about two kids who have cancer, they meet in a support group and they just fall in love. They love to read and write. It’s truly a beautiful story.
I also love drama and mystery but mainly romance.
Most of the time before I read a book, I search it on goodreads and I read reviews and just see what people think and then If I find good enough reviews I go and buy the book.
I don’t read more than one book at a time.

  10. I study online, and as a result, I read quite a bit, mostly online. Articles make up a big portion, but I have not lost my passion for a good book, preferably fiction.

  11. Thank you Bethie for visiting my post. 🙂

    5. I read both physical book as well as ebooks.

    I have a collection of 63 e-books on medicine https://drnancymalik.wordpress.com/2013/07/30/download-books-on-homeopathy/
